Heating Mantles Singapore
A heating mantle does one job well: it wraps the lower half of a round-bottom flask in a controlled layer of heat, so solvents can be boiled, refluxed or distilled without a flame and without the hot spot a bare hot plate creates. Used with the wrong controller, though, it becomes a very effective way to overheat a sample quietly while the display reads something reasonable.

Choosing the Right Size and Power
Buy the mantle for the flask you actually use, not for the largest flask you might one day buy. The heating fabric must make contact with the flask wall over its full lower hemisphere; a flask that is too small for the bowl sits loose, runs hot against one side of the glass and heats unevenly, while a flask that is too large simply does not fit. If several flask sizes are in regular use, it is cheaper to hold two correctly sized mantles than to compromise with one.
Power is the setting people get wrong most often. A mantle with far more wattage than the flask needs will drive the glass wall past the set point before the bulk liquid catches up, and the temperature probe, if it is in the liquid, will not see it. For reflux and solvent recovery the lower end of the power range gives a calmer boil and less bumping, both of which matter when the distillate is being collected and weighed.
Controllers, Sensors and Safe Operation
The mantle itself has no thermostat. An energy regulator applies power in coarse steps and continues heating after the set point is reached; it is fine for simple boiling but poor for anything that needs a steady temperature. A solid state or PID controller with a sensor in the flask holds the set point closely and is the right choice for distillations, digestions and reactions with a narrow operating band. Where a mantle has a built-in stirrer, use it: stirring distributes heat and is the single most effective way to prevent bumping and local charring.
Set the flask centrally in the bowl so the heating element does not press against one side, place the assembly on a heat resistant surface with the mantle vents clear, and never cover the mantle or wrap it to speed heating. Connect it to an earthed supply, route the cord away from the hot bowl, and do not leave a distillation unattended. If liquid spills onto the mantle, isolate the power at the socket first; a mantle that has absorbed liquid into the heating fabric cannot be dried and returned to service on inspection alone, and should be replaced.

Store mantles dry, upright and with the cord coiled away from the bowl so the heating fabric is not compressed or creased. Keep a dedicated mantle for each routine method where possible, mark the flask sizes on the housing, and retire a mantle as soon as the fabric stiffens, discolours heavily or smells of burnt solvent.
